Lahontan Clarity Challenge

Charting the Course to Clarity presents highlights of the strategy for restoring Lake Tahoe’s clarity. If citizens and their government agencies support an effective course of action based in scientific understanding of Lake Tahoe, the clarity standard can be achieved. The strategy presented in this document is the result of decades of data collection, the work of hundreds of scientists and engineers, and the involvement of citizens.

Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board has delegated the reduction of pollutants, especially fine sediments, to each one of the Counties for a 32% reduction eventually. Lahontan will support but there are penalties if their goals are not met. Placer County has two of the three greatest polluting creeks in Lake Tahoe. Blackwood and Ward Creek must be restored to reduce the fine sediment entering the Lake.

Proposed Amendments to the Water Quality Control Plan for the Lahontan Region: Lake Tahoe Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). The Lake Tahoe TMDL describes a restoration plan to halt Lake Tahoe’s transparency decline and restore transparency to meet the established standard.
